For several summers, immigration processes kept my husband and me from traveling, while our children spent the majority of their break with grandparents, cousins, and at camp. They were happy, and I was happy for them, but I missed them deeply. Both things could be true at the same time. The summer of 2026 began with the hope that things might feel different. Our children were older, and before they left for their summer travels, I had planned a few simple days together: movies, hamburgers, time at home, and even a World Cup match. Then, quite suddenly, my husband became very ill. Within days we were in the hospital, all our plans cancelled, and our children had to leave without us. I stayed home with my husband. The Florida summer rains were constant. The children were far away. And on the same day they left, two earthquakes struck Venezuela, the country where I was born and love. Unexpectedly, the World Cup became a kind of balm for my heart. I loved watching the games and everything surrounding them: the joy of the Mexican supporters, the row of Norway, the Japanese fans cleaning the stadiums, the fashion collaborations, the cities filled with people celebrating, and the renewed sense of pride and connection that seemed to appear everywhere. There was something moving about knowing that millions of people, across different countries and cultures, were watching the same game at the same moment. El juego bonito. Most matches I watched at home, on mute because my husband needed quiet. So, I placed a small table in front of the television, took out a block of paper, watercolors, and a brush, and began to paint. That is how the series World Cup began. The works are intentionally light, simple, and playful. They carry something of that collective joy—the excitement of the fans, the focus and intensity of the players, and the rare feeling of the world coming together around the same game. More than anything, they hold the spirit of a moment that felt fun, light, and unexpectedly joyful. By the end of the summer, things had shifted. My husband began his recovery, our long immigration wait was resolved, and at the end of August I was able to reunite with my family and return to the Caribbean Sea.
